Welcome to St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Jarrow

On behalf of the children, staff and governors, I would like to welcome you to St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School.

We are a vibrant, hardworking and friendly learning community which seeks to provide a high quality and inclusive education for each and every one of our amazing children.

Our dedicated and passionate staff team work hard to provide a safe and stimulating environment where children can feel secure and excited about learning.

Our aim is to nurture the uniqueness of every child and respond to their individual strengths and needs, equipping them with the tools for future learning and the confidence to follow their dreams.

Our Curriculum

The staff team plan together to ensure we offer a balanced curriculum. Our first objective is to ensure your child is happy coming to school so that they can learn effectively.

The curriculum is divided into three stages:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage: from ages 0–5 years
  • Key Stage 1: from ages 5–7 years
  • Key Stage 2: from ages 7–11 years

Nursery and Reception

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is based on seven areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Key Stages 1 & 2

Core Learning Mathematics, Literacy, Science and Religious Education.
Foundation Subjects Information and Design Technology, History, Geography, Art and Music.
Wider Curriculum Physical Education, Personal and Social Education and Modern Foreign Language.

Pastoral Care

Whilst academic achievements are an important part of life at our school, all children also have the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of sporting and musical opportunities, as well as regular visits and residential visits.

Our pastoral care is exceptional, ensuring all children are kept safe and are supported both inside and outside school.

Main School 9.00am – 3.15pm
Doors open at 8.45am
Nursery: 15 Hours 8.45am – 11.45am
or
12.10pm – 3.10pm
Nursery: 30 Hours 8.45am – 2.45pm

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club runs from 7.45am each morning. This facility provides a good start to the day for families who require extended childcare provision.

After School Provision

We use the after school provision offered by Oscars at Hedworthfield Community Centre. Pupils are collected from school by a member of staff and escorted to the off-site provision.

Free school meals are available to all children in Reception and Key Stage 1. They are also available to older children whose parents are in receipt of certain benefits. Please contact the school office for further information.

Uniform

School uniform at St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Jarrow

We expect children at St. Joseph’s to come to school clean and neatly dressed. A school uniform provides children with a sense of belonging, a good working attitude and a respectful and unified environment.

  • Red sweatshirt or cardigan
  • White polo shirt or shirt
  • Grey trousers or skirt
  • Black sensible shoes, no trainers

P.E. Kit

  • Black plimsolls
  • Red T-shirt
  • Blue shorts

Please make sure everything is marked with your child’s name. Parents can also purchase school badges from the school office to iron onto plain clothing. School branded uniform is available from J K Clothing, 52 Ellison Street, Jarrow, NE32 3HX.

Extra-Curricular Activities & Parental Involvement

Extra-Curricular Activities

We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities for all ages, including guitar, sewing, football, gymnastics, art, drama, skipping, dance and athletics.

Children are entitled to two hours of physical activity each week through a range of activities including team games, dance, gymnastics and swimming.

We are actively involved in the South Tyneside Schools’ Sports Partnership, which ensures children have access to a wide range of local school competitions.

Parental Involvement

As soon as your child starts at St. Joseph’s, you are a member of our school community.

We believe that the education of a child is a partnership and aim to support families in as many ways as possible.

We value the contributions of parents and family and actively encourage you to help, including reading with pupils, sewing, cooking or supporting educational visits. All volunteers require a DBS check before coming into school.

Chadwick’s Kitchen

Our award-winning in-house catering team, Chadwick’s Kitchen, provides catering services across the Trust.

  • Fresh ingredients are used to prepare healthy and nutritionally balanced meals each day
  • The majority of menus are homemade by chefs in our kitchens
  • Medical diets are accommodated in partnership with parents
  • Parents and carers can pay for school meals using ParentPay
  • Pupils entitled to free meals can purchase food to the value of the daily allowance
  • Packed lunches are permitted, but nuts and nut-based products are not allowed

As part of the Trust’s commitment to sustainability, food miles are regularly reviewed and work continues to reduce food waste.
